MANILA – Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Eduardo Ano has urged for the country to be placed on Alert Level 1 to speed up economic recovery in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak.

Previously, Ano expected that Metro Manila and many other places would be placed under Alert Level 1 until June, after being downshifted to the mildest pandemic health restriction from April 1 to 15.

The DILG chairman explained that this is due to a gradual drop of active Covid-19 cases in the country, but he also cautioned the public not to become complacent, urging them to stick to the minimal public health standards.

When comparing the data from March 21 to 27, Ano saw a 24 percent decrease in Covid-19 active cases, which he described as “excellent results” that he expects would result in the country being placed on Alert Level 1.

In a press conference in Camp Crame, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos backed Ano’s remarks, saying that now that travel restrictions have been eased, the focus is on securing travelers ahead of the Holy Week break.

“Ahead of the annual Holy Week retreat next week, the PNP is focusing on public safety and expanded law enforcement activities to ensure a safe and secure national observance of the Holy Week.” “These public safety activities will also include increased police visibility and preventive patrols in Islamic communities and places of worship to ensure a peaceful and orderly observance of Ramadhan, which began this weekend,” Carlos stated.

The PNP expects a rise in passenger traffic at public transportation hubs, seaports, and domestic air terminals across the country.

To assist motorists, Carlos said police support centers and road safety marshals will be stationed throughout national routes.

Payouts for ‘Ayuda’ have been halted.

Meanwhile, Ano has cautioned that candidates who give cash to constituents under the pretense of financial aid will be prosecuted.

The DILG chief also acknowledged that he had received allegations of provincial local authorities using public resources to print campaign materials such as tarpaulins that had been posted on social media.

Each municipality has an election campaign committee up to the municipal level, according to Ano, to ensure that election-related complaints are sent to authorities as quickly as possible.
