MANILA, Philippines โ€” According to a health official, the number of new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases has remained low across the country, averaging about 366 per day in the last week.

According to the latest data from the Department of Health (DOH), the country saw 2,568 new infections from March 29 to April 4.

“Patunay ito na mababa na talaga ang ating case rates, nasa 1.8 percent na lamang po ang ating positivity rate, mas mababa kumpara sa 2.1 percent noong nakaraang linggo (This is proof that case rates are truly low, with a positivity rate of 1.8 percent, which is lower than last week’s 2.1 percent),” says the “During an online media forum, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said.

More than 66.2 million people have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19, and 71.4 million have gotten their first dose of the life-saving vaccine, thanks to the government’s continuous efforts.

Individuals with comorbidities who have finished their primary series have reached 8.9 million, or 93.2 percent of the target population, while the senior population has reached 66 million, or 75.9% of the target population.

Meanwhile, more than one million youngsters aged 5 to 11 and nine million teenagers have had their full vaccinations.

Vergeire stated in her presentation that nations with higher booster and immunization rates have had fewer mortality in recent Covid-19 outbreaks.

She mentioned that novel coronavirus strains have caused an increase in infections in Hong Kong and New Zealand recently.

In comparison to New Zealand, Hong Kong had 38 times higher deaths per one million people, although administering fewer vaccine boosters.

According to Vergeire, only a few senior persons aged 80 and up were vaccinated in Hong Kong prior to the outbreak of the Omicron type.

“It’s less than 25% in Hong Kong, but it’s more than 90% in New Zealand,” she explained. “According to studies conducted by the US CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention], being boosted reduces the likelihood of hospitalization by 81% during the peak of an Omicron variant attack.”

The Department of Health reminded students, parents, and teachers to continue to follow the health standards when over 13,000 public and private schools began face-to-face courses on Monday.
