MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) announced Thursday that the Department of Agriculture (DA) has distributed PHP3.6 million to poultry farms affected by the avian influenza virus or bird flu in the country.

The PHP3,608,630 indemnification acts as compensation in exchange for culled animals, primarily ducks, quails, and native chickens, in 49 barangays throughout five regions of the nation, according to DA spokesperson Assistant Secretary Noel Reyes in a virtual briefing.

The indemnification amounts to PHP100 every duck or native chicken slaughtered and PHP15 per quail slaughtered.

The DA has given an initial amount of PHP25 million from their quick reaction fund for the indemnity scheme, according to BAI Director Reildrin Morales.

70 cases of bird flu have been documented in 10 locations across the country so far, with 67 of them being resolved.

Because the virus is thought to have been spread by migratory birds, Morales warned backyard farmers to follow biosafety procedures.

“Panatilihing malinis ‘yung loob ng kanilang mga farms para nang sa ganun hindi ‘yan makapag-attract ng mga wild birds, migratory birds, kasi po usually ‘yung mga nakatapon na feeds, ‘yung mga ipot, ‘yung mga buo-buong mais, ‘yan po ‘yung dinadayo ng mga ibon doon sa loob ng mga farms at dun po nagkakaroon ng contact ‘yung wild at saka ‘yung domestic.

Despite the bird flu threat, Morales stated that the public need not be concerned about the availability of chicken meat or eggs because no virus has been identified in 43-day-old broiler chicks.
