Marcos intends to increase the number of non-teaching employees in public schools.

MANILA, Philippines — Work overload is a long-standing issue among public school instructors.

That is, they are required to execute other tasks unrelated to their duties, resulting in weariness and burnout on their part, which in turn affects the quality of their instruction.

In order to remedy the matter, presidential contender Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. intends to increase the number of non-teaching workers in public schools.

He believes that reducing teachers’ non-teaching duties is one method to preserve high-quality education in public schools.

According to studies, many public school teachers hold supplementary jobs that are unrelated to their areas of specialty or specialization.

Some instructors, for example, serve as librarians or even property custodians. Others are working as nurses, canteen supervisors, or even athletic directors, according to him.

Marcos stated that he planned to improve this inefficient system by filling vacancies in every public school and increasing the amount of non-teaching workers to relieve instructors of their workload.

Non-teaching staff, according to the standard-bearer of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), would provide teachers more time to prepare for their lessons and focus solely on the subjects they were assigned to.

“Matagal na dinadaing ng ating mga guro ang ganitong sistema,’yung extra work,’yung non-teaching loads, panahon na para baguhin at matugunan ito, so paano?” (Our instructors have long grumbled about this system, ‘the extra work,’ the non-teaching burdens; now is the moment to modify and address it; how should we do it?) “We need to hire more qualified non-teaching professionals,” Marcos said in a news release on Thursday. “Yung tinutukoy ko is yung mga sobrang ginagawa ng mga guro na hindi naman dapat sila gumagawa (I’m talking to the things that teachers do too much of that they shouldn’t be doing).”

“In that case, we can ease the work of the teachers, mabibigyan natin sila ng mahabang oras na makapag handa, makapag-prepare ng mga lesson sa kung anong subject na ituturo nila, kung minsan kasi yung mga guro natin, teacher na sila nagiging librarian, nurse din sila, may nababalitaan pa tayo na may mga nagbabantay pa ng canteen (we can give them a long time to prepare, to prepare lessons on whatever subject they will teach, sometimes because our teachers, they are teachers who become librarians, they are also nurses, we still hear that there are still guards of the canteen),” he added.

Marcos further stated that relieving teachers of additional responsibilities would safeguard their mental health, which was clearly harmed by the pandemic.

“In this pandemic, we have seen how the adjustment of teachers has been, and it has been kahanga-hanga naman talaga, but hindi natin maitatanggi na marami sa mga guro natin ang nahihirapan sa mga gawain, marami ang nai-stress, nadi-depress at labis na naape

Marcos previously stated that he intends to revisit the Department of Education (DepEd) K-12 program, in addition to raising teacher salaries and providing proper benefits.

In addition, the former senator intends to hire more permanent teachers.

“Obviously, mag-hire pa tayo ng mas maraming permanent teachers, kulang talaga tayo sa mga guro, pero ang pagkaka-alam ko naman yearly ito ginagawa ng DepEd, pabilisan siguro natin ‘yung application nila para mapunan yung kakulangan natin sa
