Students in Ilocos Norte recycle candidate posters.
On Wednesday, student volunteers from Luzong National High School (LNHS) in Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte, took the time to remove campaign posters days after the 2022 national and municipal elections.
The gathered plastic items will be shredded and made into eco-bricks, according to LNHS instructor Thelma Ruiz Sacsac, while the tarpaulin posters will be repurposed into eco-bags.
“This is part of their physical education and health curriculum, where learning can happen at any time,” Sacsac remarked after leading the activity, which began at 6 a.m. along the national highway.
They went to the river to wash the plastic materials after gathering hundreds of posters along the route. Sacsac said the students loved swimming in the river while waiting for the materials to dry.
The Pagudpud school is one of the province’s green advocacy schools, supporting the government’s solid waste management program execution.
“Our garbage recycling effort is in collaboration with Dr. Gladys Acoba’s Salaknib program at the school and Mr. Peps Morata’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO),” she explained. The school promotes the usage of eco-bricks, which have become a source of income for some of the students and townspeople.
According to Sacsac, one eco-tile brick is made for every 50 to 100 pieces of plastic, and it is five to six times stronger than a standard sand and cement brick.
These 15×15 inch eco-tile bricks are then sold to gardeners and resort owners in Pagudpud town for PHP80 to PHP100 each to enhance their landscaping.
MENRO’s Morata also declared on Wednesday that discarded tarpaulins for eco-bag production are still being accepted. He also expressed gratitude to the LNHS students for their assistance in removing the campaign posters.
