According to a study, pollution kills almost 9 million people worldwide each year.

Despite reductions in deaths from home air and water pollution, pollution still kills more than 9 million people each year, accounting for one out of every six deaths worldwide, according to a study published in a leading medical journal on Wednesday.

“Industrialization, uncontrolled urbanization, population growth, fossil fuel combustion, and an absence of adequate national or international chemical policy have all contributed to a 66 percent increase in deaths caused by modern forms of pollution over the last two decades,” according to the Lancet Planetary Health study.

Pollution-related mortality accounts for more than 90% of deaths in low- and middle-income nations.

Every year, air pollution kills nearly 6.5 million people worldwide, while lead and other toxins kill 1.8 million.

South Asia, East Asia, and Southeast Asia have seen an increase in pollution-related mortality.

Household air and water pollution remain the leading sources of pollution-related sickness and death in Africa.

“While high-income countries have been able to limit their worst kinds of pollution, only a few low- and middle-income countries have been able to make pollution a priority, allocate resources to pollution control, or make progress,” according to the study.

The study’s authors stated that controlling pollution and preventing pollution-related sickness requires immediate attention and that most governments have done nothing to address this massive public health issue.

“Successful control of these conjoined threats requires a globally supported, formal science–policy interface to inform intervention, influence research, and guide funding,” the researchers said, adding that the triad of pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss are closely linked but are largely ignored in the international development agenda.
