The Marcos administration is drafting a “more expansive” policy for journalists.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” According to Press Secretary-designate Trixie Cruz-Angeles, the incoming Marcos administration is working on a “more expansive” legislation that will provide more security and benefits to the country’s media workers.

“Our journalists’ safety is always a concern for us. On this subject, we’re working on a possible new policy. During the Laging Handa briefing, Cruz-Angeles commented, “Perhaps we’ll make it a little more expansive.”

She made the comment in response to the National Press Club’s (NPC) request that the new Marcos administration continue to support the Presidential Task Force on Media Security’s operations (PTFoMs).

The enlarged program, according to Cruz-Angeles, will encompass the promotion of journalists’ welfare.

She claimed that the revised strategy would assist media professionals in dealing with the Covid-19 outbreak.

“So, you know, we’re looking into welfare, not just safety or protection, because the current approach appears to be centered on attacks, physical attacks on our journalists.” We’d also like to look into expanding it to include our journalists’ well-being. “The pandemic has taken a toll on some of them,” she said.

By virtue of Administrative Order 1, President Rodrigo Duterte established PTFoMs on Oct. 11, 2016, to secure and protect journalists from threats and violence.

The creation of the media task force, according to PTFoMS executive director Undersecretary Joel Sy Egco, is “certainly a legacy” of the Duterte administration because it has established a “safe atmosphere” for Philippine journalists.

In a special resolution, the NPC stated that media workers have relied on PTFoMs as a direct path to the President’s Office for swift action on their complaints.

It also asked President-elect Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. to consider bolstering the PTFoMS by issuing an executive order transforming it into a presidential commission on media security, which would “enhance its power in efficiently addressing all concerns pertaining to the country’s media industry.”

Egco, the NPC’s previous president, was endorsed as the proposed body’s chair by the NPC.
