An official announced Tuesday that the local government will provide food subsidies to at least 45,020 indigents and people stricken by the coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) this month.

“This is actually the third batch of food subsidy disbursements to our people who have been severely impacted by the pandemic,” said Michiko de Jesus, the city’s information officer.

According to De Jesus, the distribution of subsidies consisting of 10 kilos of rice and other foodstuffs will continue through June 23.

She said that the last two food subsidy distributions, in December last year and March-April this year, directly helped more than 90,000 residents in the city.

So far, at least 4,204 residents have benefited from this month’s subsidies.

“The order from Mayor Ronnie Vicente Lagnada to the city social welfare office is clear,” De Jesus added, “and that is to sustain the food subsidy while we fight this pandemic.”

On Monday, Charlito Semine Awitin, a senior citizen from Barangay Datu Silongan, was one of the recipients of his food subsidy.

“My wife and I rely on our modest store for our everyday requirements. The subsidy is a tremendous benefit to us because the pandemic has had a big impact on our income,” Awitin explained.
