MANILA, Philippines — According to Katrina Chan, co-founder of QBO Innovation Hub, bolstering support for local entrepreneurs will aid the country’s recovery from the effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic.

In a webcast on Tuesday, Chan said the current epidemic has demonstrated the resiliency of entrepreneurs in the previous two years as they have adapted and created solutions.

“Our startups are in better shape than they’ve ever been.” “We firmly believe that supporting startups is critical to the country’s resilience and recovery in order to become more innovative and competitive,” she stated.

She went on to say that enhancing the country’s competitiveness and encouraging innovation will help the country thrive economically and provide jobs for Filipinos.

Chan urged Bayanihan, or public-private collaboration, to help the local startup community and ecosystem grow and capitalize on the industry’s momentum.

“Acquiring funding is definitely the most important thing that people look for,” he added, “but there are a lot of other things around, such as getting clients, talent, even getting counsel and mentorship.”

According to Chan, QBO, a public-private partnership that gives support and resources to businesses, aspires to generate the country’s own unicorn, dubbed Qalabaw, which is a startup that achieves a valuation of over USD1 billion without going public.
