CITY OF LAOAG – The provincial office of the National Food Authority (NFA) has assured the public that there is adequate rice buffer stock to last until October this year throughout the rainy season.

At an interview on Friday, NFA-Ilocos Norte provincial manager Jonathan Corpuz said citizens should not be concerned because the agency still has at least 26,000 sacks of palay and 15,000 sacks of rice in NFA-designated warehouses in the province.

He predicted that the buffer supply would last until the second week of October, just in time for harvest season.

Since January 2021, all NFA rice supply in the province has come from local rice growers rather than being imported, according to Corpuz.

The NFA bought 39,500 bags of palay from Ilocos Norte farmers, 145,000 bags from Ilocos Sur, and 27,000 bags from Abra farmers last year.

NFA rice costs PHP25 per kilo, while palay costs PHP19 per kilo as of this writing.

The NFA has worked with the government of Ilocos Norte to boost up inventories of the Filipino dietary staple to assure a consistent supply, even in extreme emergency conditions like during a big storm.

In an earlier interview, Provincial Board Member Domingo Ambrocio, chair of the Agriculture Committee, emphasized the need of maintaining a constant price for primary commodities in the province.

In past years, the Ilocos Norte board has set aside roughly PHP35 million to buy palay and rice from approved rice traders and farmers in the province.

This ensures that the government of Ilocos Norte has enough rice until the following harvest season.

Individual farmers or authorized farmers’ organizations in various sections of the province are the farmer recipients, whereas qualified merchants refer to groups and individuals engaged in palay or rice trading.
