Building the 2nd San Juanico Bridge will cost P9.17B

The second San Juanico Bridge, which connects the islands of Leyte and Samar, would cost the national government PHP9.17 billion to construct, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) announced on Tuesday.

The proposed project’s initial feasibility study has been completed, according to Allan Borromeo, regional director of DPWH Eastern Visayas, and it met the 10 percent economic internal rate of return requirement imposed by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).

According to research by DPWH and the Japan International Cooperation Agency, the projected expenditure will mostly be used for the building of bridge superstructure, substructure, embankment, concrete girders, and relocation of power transmission lines.

“The sole bridge that connects the islands of Samar and Leyte by land is the two-lane San Juanico Bridge, which was constructed in the 1960s. Every year, the volume of traffic has risen, according to an interview with Borromeo.

San Juanico Bridge traffic in 2019 is 7,200 vehicles per day, which is not far from its 10,000 daily capacity.

The number is anticipated to reach a maximum of 10,900 per day in 2030. In 2040, 15,900 are anticipated to be involved.

The main road linking Luzon to Mindanao includes the 2.16-kilometer San Juanico Bridge.

The towns of Sta. Rita, Samar and Babatngon, Leyte will be connected by the proposed bridge. It will pass via the Janbatas Channel, which is a section of the San Juanico Strait that divides the two largest islands in the area.

The proposed bridge will be 1.24 kilometers long and will run from San Pascual hamlet in Sta. Rita, Samar, to Guintigui-an village in Babatngon, Leyte.

Given that the 1973-built San Juanico Bridge is experiencing problems, such as aging and high maintenance expenses, Borromeo claimed that this investigation is urgent.
