After the arrest of extortionists, Zubiri pushes the SIM registration bill.

On Wednesday, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri urged for the SIM card registration bill’s swift approval as he announced the arrest of two men who had attempted to extort PHP60,000 from his office for a fictitious political convention.

After receiving a slew of mails on August 14 from people acting as Siquijor Governor Jake Vincent Villa and Board Member Abner Lomongo, requesting for money for an alleged political convention, Zubiri claimed he sought help from Philippine National Police (PNP) head Gen. Ronald Azurin Jr.

Zubiri was able to clarify that Villa had no participation in the situation during a private phone call.

The senator stated, “I was resolved to engage with the PNP to put a stop to these criminals. I have heard from several of my colleagues that they had fallen victim to similar schemes before.

Azurin gave the Regional Field Unit National Capital Region of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group the task of organizing and carrying out a police entrapment operation.

After the suspects agreed to meet in Castillejos, Zambales, with a member of Zubiri’s staff for the exchange of cash, the entrapment operation was carried out the next day, on August 15.

Bryan Ledesma, 23, and Danilo Guillermo, 46, both natives of Castillejos, Zambales, were detained for robbery, extortion, estafa, and unlawful possession of guns.

According to a statement from Azurin, “our investigations found that Danilo Ledesma was previously arrested on suspicion of trafficking illegal substances in Castillejos, Zambales, last year.”

The suspects were also found to be in possession of boodle money, which was covered with a real, marked PHP1,000 bill, as well as a.45-caliber revolver with seven rounds of live ammo but no serial number, for which the suspects had failed to show identification.

The PNP, in particular CIDG-RFU NCR, Southern DFU CIDG, and the Castillejos Police Station, Zambales PPO, where the suspects were transported, were all thanked by Zubiri for organizing the operation.

Azurin, on the other hand, applauded the CIDG for taking prompt action while warning other government representatives and employees to be cautious of such tactics.

Always work together with law enforcement so that we can confirm these reports and support you, he advised.

“Bilang senador, itong nangyari sa akin ‘yung isa sa mga dahilan kung bakit ko patuloy na isinusulong ang SIM Card Registration Bill,” Zubiri remarked in reference to his proposed SIM card proposal. As a senator, what occurred to me is one of the reasons I continue to advocate for Senate Bill No. 82, often known as the SIM Card Registration Bill. Marami na ang biktima sa ganitong mga modus. I re-filed Senate Bill No. 82, also known as the SIM Card Registration Bill, because there have been numerous victims of this type of methodology. Although I am aware that the previous administration vetoed it, I am optimistic that this Congress will allow its passage.
