To resolve conflicts, Marcos argues for a “rules-based international order.”
On Wednesday (Manila time), President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. underlined the value of upholding the international legal order to resolve conflicts.
During the 77th session of the UNGA, Marcos remarked in a speech to the world leaders that disagreements should be settled “by peaceful means,” “through reason, and through right.”
Marcos stated that the Manila Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) offer “valuable advice for our time.”
“For a crucial ballast stabilizes our common vessel among the tough global tides. That is, our transparent, inclusive, and rule-based international system, which is guided by the principles of equality and justice and governed by international law,” Marcos remarked.
“Our people decided to survive. They opted to work together. They opted for peace. And they created history in the process. He continued that history is calling us to make these decisions once more today.
The UNCLOS, enacted in 1982, establishes a comprehensive legal framework that regulates all operations and uses of the world’s seas and oceans. Additionally, it sets forth general requirements for preserving the marine environment and defending the right to conduct scientific studies on the high seas.
On the other hand, the UNGA’s 1982 adoption of the Manila Declaration on the Peaceful Settlement of International Disputes is an important document that supports this goal.
The resource-rich South China Sea (SCS), where Beijing claims around 80% of the strategic waterways, is the subject of a territorial dispute involving the Philippines, China, and several other coastal states.
On July 12, 2016, the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague granted The Philippines’ petition after the arbitral tribunal rejected Beijing’s assertion of purported historic rights over nearly the entire SCS.
But China has consistently disregarded the PCA judgment.
“Friend to all, foe to none”
In his keynote speech, Marcos reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing a stand-alone foreign policy that positions the Philippines as “a friend to everyone and an adversary of none.”
He emphasized that the Philippines will continue to be a friend to everyone and a foe to none.
Marcos stated that the Philippines would continue to be a “good neighbor” that seeks collaboration and cooperation to produce “mutually beneficial outcomes” in his first State of the Nation Address on July 25.
According to Marcos, all nations’ success depends on unity.
The choice to travel into the future as separate nations or as a world in peace is ours. I believe that all nations should face the difficulties faced by one person. And thus, success for one will result in success for all of us. He said the UN member states.
“The people of the world turn to us, our leaders, to realize these hopes for the future. We can’t let them down. And if we work together, we won’t let them down. Together, we have the best chance of success. Let’s hope and work together for those victories for all of our nations, Marcos remarked.
