Russian annexation referendums are “illegal,” according to the UN.

According to the UN’s political chief, Russian-backed referendums in Ukraine’s occupied territories “are not a genuine manifestation of popular will” or “legitimate” under international law.

According to Rosemary DiCarlo, “unilateral measures intended at providing a veneer of legitimacy to the attempted acquisition by one State by force of the territory of another State, while purporting to reflect the will of the people, cannot be regarded as legal under international law.”

According to the results of referendums held in the Ukrainian provinces of Kherson, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, and Luhansk, 98 percent of voters chose to join Russia.

DiCarlo reaffirmed the UN’s unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity and asked that Russia uphold Ukrainian law in the seized regions by international law.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, told the 15-member Security Council that Russia’s referendums are an attempt to seize territory and overturn international law principles and that Russia should be isolated.

The male population in the Ukrainian territories under occupation is being coerced into enlisting in the Russian army to fight for their country, according to Zelenskyy.

He claimed that if Russia held phony referendums to acquire seized Ukrainian territory, there would be nothing left to discuss with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Zelenskyy accused Russia of pursuing a “genocidal policy” and preventing a nuclear catastrophe by keeping the globe at arm’s length.

He pushed for the exclusion of Russia from all international institutions.

Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US representative to the UN, announced that Washington would submit a draft resolution to the Security Council denouncing what it called “fake” referendums in the Ukrainian areas that had declared independence.

According to Thomas-Greenfield, Washington will look to the General Assembly to discuss the veto if Russia vetoes the resolution draft.

She requested that Russia withdraw its soldiers and urged nations not to recognize any change in Ukraine’s status.

The sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations should be respected, the goals and tenets of the UN Charter should be followed, and the legitimate security concerns of all nations should be treated seriously, according to Zhang Jun, China’s ambassador to the UN.

Vassily Nebenzia, the Russian representative to the UN, justified the Moscow-backed referendums in the occupied regions of Ukraine by claiming that they were conducted “transparently” and by international standards.
