In light of the impending postponement of the elections to October of next year, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) stated on Tuesday that it sees nothing improper with the ongoing preparations for the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) on December 5.

“To be honest, it’s obvious that getting ready for the elections in advance is not against the law. We can start preparing for the elections early. This is why George Erwin Garcia, the Comelec chairman, initially stated in a radio interview, “We aim to continue preparing.

Garcia pointed out that even if the elections are postponed to a later date, the materials and equipment that must be purchased for the polls in December can still be used.

“Even though the elections have been rescheduled and delayed, we may still use them. We can produce a resolution indicating that they are the same ballots to be used for October 2023 elections even if they state that Election Day is December 5, 2022, he said.

Garcia reaffirmed that their legal team is investigating any ramifications of the impending delay for them to comply with government audit laws and regulations.

“Can we still pay our election suppliers if the elections don’t go through? He said that if the law still permits us, we are considering this.

The BSKE postponement measure has been approved by the Senate and the House of Representatives.

The village and youth elections in 2022 will be shifted to the final Monday in October 2023 once the bill has been passed.
