PBBM to Crame: Take all necessary action to stop acts of violence.
According to Malacanang, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has instructed Camp Crame to “implement all measures required” to stop acts of violence in the Custodial Center and other PNP prison facilities.
Officer-in-charge After former senator Leila de Lima was taken hostage by prisoner Feliciano Sulayao Jr., who was arrested on suspicion of being a sub-leader of the local terrorist Abu Sayyaf Group, press secretary Cheloy Garafil released this statement.
The hostage-taking began when Sulayao and fellow prisoners Arnel Cabintoy and Idang Susukan grabbed a police officer distributing food rations at the maximum compound of the PNP Custodial Center at around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to Police Brig. Gen. Roderick Augustus Alba, head of the PNP Public Information Office.
As they tried to flee, the three grouped up and attacked Cpl. Roger Agustin, a member of the security forces.
When Pat. Lorenz Matias heard noises from the tower, and he instantly reacted by firing, hitting, and killing Cabintoy and Susukan.
Sulayao was able to escape and ran into the Juliet building of the maximum facility, where he took de Lima prisoner.
As of the time of posting, de was deemed safe while Agustin was in the hospital.
Sulayao also perished.
According to Alba, Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., head of the PNP, has mandated a thorough inquiry into the event.
Following the incident at Camp Crame this morning, Marcos wrote on Twitter, “I will be speaking to Senator De Lima to check on her condition and to inquire if she wishes to be relocated to another detention institution.”
Quick and decisive action
Senator and former PNP director Panfilo Lacson praised the PNP for its “quick and resolute” response.
Before the typical detractors paint the PNP negatively, Lacson stated in a statement, “the reaction undertaken by the PNP in the foiled hostage-taking of former senator de Lima and the in-depth inquiry already ordered by CPNP Azurin must be taken into consideration.”
However, Lacson insisted that “an unbiased investigation” must be launched immediately to avert the tragedy’s repeat.
While we should pray for the hurt police officer, it is more vital that the intended hostage is secure and unharmed, according to Lacson.
Benhur Abalos Jr., Secretary of the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) visited de Lima after the incident.
According to President Bongbong Marcos’ orders, Senator de Lima would have the option of staying in her current facility or being transferred to a different one while keeping her safety in mind. The senator’s safety is of utmost importance. Senator de Lima decided to remain in her current location, according to a statement Abalos issued on his Facebook page.
Hero
The inmate’s request for water during the negotiation gave Col. Mark Pespes, the director of the Headquarters Support Service, a chance to kill Sulayao.
According to Abalos, Pespes is the hero since he started the negotiation and used an opportunity to take out the hostage-taker. Col. Pespes showed resolve. He evaluated the circumstance, purchased sometimes, and when the chance arose, he shot the hostage-taker to free Senator de Lima.
According to Pespes, the hostage-taking will become riskier the longer it lasts.
“There was no great accomplishment after taking them hostage, unfortunately. Therefore, we are very fortunate that our senator was unsuccessful despite the hostage being slain. Because of this, Pespes added in an interview, “We are fortunate that the [former] senator is secure.
The DILG praised the PNP for acting quickly.
According to a DILG statement, the Special Response Force members’ prompt action in shooting the three PUPCs (Persons Under Police Custody) prevented the confrontation from escalating further.
‘Surreal’
De Lima extended gratitude to “those who expressed concern for my well-being in the aftermath of the weird hostage-taking episode” in another statement.
“I think of what occurred to me as a close call. Since the hostage-taker was already determined to die and take me with him, I doubt I would have survived if it weren’t for the prompt involvement of the PNP security unit, the victim claimed.
She claimed that she was now secure, except for the lingering ache in the spot on her chest where the hostage-taker repeatedly pushed the knife point.
Please pray for the hurt police officer, who was the incident’s other victim but a more unfortunate one than I was. He is still fighting for his life, while I have managed to survive with just a knife mark and some significant distress. Let’s all pray for his speedy recovery, de la stated.
Azurin also begged the people to pray for Agustin, who is in a critical state, in a radio interview.
“Let’s pray that he would survive the operation if one is necessary because he is one of the good officers of our PNP,” Azurin said. “Ipagdasal po natin na sana po ay malampasan po niya ‘yung operation si may iko-conduct na operation.”
Investigation
Opposition While visiting de Lima, Senators Risa Hontiveros and Robinhood Padilla both demanded an explanation for the event. It deemed it discriminatory because officers were overheard referring to the prisoners as “Muslims.”
Discrimination is present when a Muslim is present in a group. The label “Muslim” is discriminatory to use the Filipino proverb. Let’s treat everyone in the Philippines fairly,” Padilla said. “Police don’t refer to them as Christians if there is a kidnapping, holdup, or murderer,” it says.
The Custodial Center, according to Senator Ronald de la Rosa, a former PNP commander, is an extremely secure location.
“Wala na akong nakitang mas secure pa sa buong Pilipinas at PNP Custodial,” the speaker said. I am unaware of any location in the Philippines that is more secure than the PNP Custodial Center. Pag pumasok ka dyan, para kang nasa. In a radio interview, he added, “It’s like a puzzle.
