Decongestion of ports to prevent pricing increases: Solon
According to a politician, decongesting ports and assuring faster transportation of products would prevent price increases in the provinces.
Reynan Arrogancia, a Quezon representative, claimed that the alleged congestion in the container yards of the port of Manila has slowed down the unloading of containers from ships and the transportation of cargo to its destination.
The vice-chairman of the House committee on transportation, Arrogancia, warned that delays in the delivery of commodities to the provinces would result in unnatural hikes in consumer prices.
He claimed that to reduce importation prices and guarantee a sufficient supply of commodities, particularly in the provinces, it is critical to maintain the efficient flow of imported goods out of the customs ports without bottlenecks and congestion.
He said that the faster import containers are shipped out, the faster supplies in the provinces are replenished, and the sooner retail prices there are stabilized. “Ports decongestion, especially of the major seaports in Manila, Batangas, Quezon, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, and Davao, can reduce price hike incidents and risks.”
He included rice, wheat, wheat flour, corn, corn meal, and sugar as some of the essential imports.
“These are essential supplies that must reach their destination to prevent arbitrary localized price increases, “added said.
He said that the local produce needs to reach the markets quickly since food is perishable, adding that growing local food production is part of the strategy to deal with the rising inflation and food supply challenges.
“The clock is ticking. He said this is the main impact that subsidized service contracting services and fuel subsidies for food transport can have.
