As Holy Week approaches, BFAR ensures a sufficient supply of fish.
For the Holy Week, which runs from April 6 to 10, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) has guaranteed a sufficient supply of fish.
Nazario Briguera, a BFAR official, said in a statement that the agency is not anticipating a shortage of fish despite rising demand and the Oriental Mindoro oil leak.
“Because the fishing activity is at its highest right now, we anticipate that the supply will keep up with demand during Mahal na Araw. Although we hope to be able to meet the high demand during Lent because we are in the height of the fishing season, the oil disaster prevents us from expecting to be able to provide the isda. Because of the oil leak, we do not observe a nationwide fish shortage, he added.
Briguera was alluding to the oil leak from the MT Princess Empress, which sank off the coast of Naujan town on February 28, that had an impact on fishing regions in Oriental Mindoro and neighboring provinces.
The BFAR has so far distributed basic aid to the impacted families in Oriental Mindoro.
The delivery of 10,000 cans of food, 5,000 bags of noodles, and 1,000 25-kg sacks of rice was noted by the bureau on Wednesday.
It stated that 5,000 families are to receive the first batch.
The BFAR said that in the interim, it has been carrying out interventions to enhance the post-harvest machinery used by the fishing industry and stop fish rotting in the nation.
Due to a lack of post-harvest tools including blast freezers, ice makers, cold storage facilities, and fish landing sites, there is now a 25 to 40% fish spoiling rate, it was said.
Earlier, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., who is also the head of the Department of Agriculture, announced the construction of 11 new cold storage facilities, which are anticipated to be operational this year, in various ports across the nation.
