DepEd considers resilient schools and institutionalized blended learning.

The Department of Education (DepEd) said on Friday that it is researching institutionalizing blended learning and developing a disaster-resistant school design.

According to DepEd spokesperson Michael Poa during a news conference, institutionalizing a blended learning environment in basic education can assist handle the effects of an expanding student population and the effects of natural disasters.

“Is it possible to institutionalize blended learning as a method in our schools?” Why are we researching how to institutionalize blended learning in our schools? Dahil po ang pananaw diyan ng Department of Education ay ito ay isa sa solusyon para diyan sa classroom scarcity. Because, in the DepEd’s opinion, it can address the issue of a lack of classrooms). This is something that we are currently looking over. And we are investigating if blended learning can be institutionalized in individual basic education schools,” he stated.

In-person, online, and other modular or alternative learning formats are all included in blended learning setups.

“Talagang mahirap nang resolbahin ‘yung pagdating sa classroom shortage, kasi bukod sa ating backlogs, perennial problem na po ‘yung ating classroom shortage, dahil taun-taon, dumadami rin ‘yung ating enrollees, at taun-taon may kalamidad na dumadaan sa

Around 165 schools were damaged by Super Typhoon Karding alone, bringing the estimated cost of repairing schools to PHP 1.169 billion.

Poa stated that the DepEd is also working towards improving school designs that may be resilient to severe disasters.

“In conjunction with the commercial sector and other organizations, we are investigating disaster-resilient schools, or pinag-aaralan na po ‘yung tinatawag nating. He said they are looking at how to improve the school designs so they may be more disaster-resistant.

Schools in typhoon-affected areas immediately switch to other learning modalities during a disaster.

Poa stated that the situation is still growing but that “we are already started to download, or we are looking to download monies to our regions to start the requirements and establish temporary learning spaces or other interventions.”

Curriculum evaluation

When the DepEd has finished examining the curriculum for grades K through 10, Poa said, they will continue talks with stakeholders through October. By November, they will begin reviewing the curriculum for grades 11 through 12.

“We want to concentrate on literacy, particularly fundamental and practical literacy. Since it is still being examined, but we cannot provide a full report on the review’s findings just yet.

He said he hoped to finish the Kโ€“12 program review by June 2023.

Additionally, the DepEd promised to make changes to the program that would solve job mismatch.

“Our promise in K-12 is that our students will be employable when they graduate after Grade 12, but they won’t necessarily be able to use that promise immediately. As a result, our strategy is to align the masses, but that isn’t happening right now. Therefore, the goal is to match (their gained abilities from) Grade 12 with what the industry needs, especially in the tech voc track, Poa said.
