
At age 95, retired pope Benedict XVI passes away.
The Vatican confirmed on Saturday that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI has passed away.
The previous pope was 95.
Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI passed away today at 9:34 in the Mater Ecclesiae Monastery in the Vatican, according to a statement from the Vatican’s spokesman Matteo Bruni that was also shared on social media.
The body of the Pope Emeritus will be in Saint Peter’s Basilica starting on Monday, January 2, 2023, so that the faithful can say their final goodbyes.
Pope Francis requested on Wednesday that the faithful pray for his predecessor, who, in his words, was in critical condition.
On February 11, 2013, the former pontiff from Germany resigned. He was the first pope to step down due to illness in more than 600 years.
Pope Benedict XVI, who was born Joseph Ratzinger, succeeded the Polish Pope Saint John Paul II as head of the Roman Catholic Church on April 19, 2005.
