DOTr will carry out ‘extensive’ PCG modernization.
Jaime Bautista, secretary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr), promised on Thursday to continue the “complete renovation” of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) by acquiring new equipment and providing officers with training.
The PCG will become a “world-class” service, according to a statement from Bautista, and its troops will be trained to be “equivalent to Coast Guards of other industrialized countries,” he added.
Attendance in top-notch educational programs from these esteemed schools “should not be taken for granted given the essentially global character of shipping and maritime transportation,” he said.
He said that as of now, the PCG employs more than 26,000 people, up from 7,000 just a few years ago.
He emphasized that the PCG “plays a critical role” in ensuring maritime security and safety and urged sustained diplomacy in the nation’s territorial waters.
He also praised the PCG for its humanitarian activities, including its role as first responders in disaster-affected areas and in search and rescue operations.
He also noted the part played by the PCG in protecting the marine environment, particularly the prosecution of illegal poachers.
Earlier, at the PCG national headquarters in Port Area, Manila, PCG Commandant Admiral Artemio Abu oversaw the turnover and blessing of 31 new land mobility assets.
According to Abu, these vehicles will be utilized to improve the services and effectiveness of “different staff officers, major commands, units, and Coast Guard districts.”
