DA assists in connecting Pampanga tomato growers and customers.
To help them sell their fresh produce directly to customers at fair pricing, tomato farmers in Lubao town, this province, received assistance from the Department of Agriculture in Central Luzon (DA-3)
The DA intervened to help farmers who were having trouble selling their tomato produce to consumers by way of its Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD).
According to DA Senior Agriculturist Carmencita Nogoy, they visited tomato fields in Lubao on Wednesday after learning that the region’s farm gate price for decent tomatoes is only PHP6 per kilo and PHP3 for class C tomatoes.
In an interview, Nogoy remarked, “We didn’t spend any time visiting and speaking with the farmer leaders in the area and totoo po pala ang mga narinig namin (it is indeed true what we’ve earlier heard)”.
She claimed that they began to market-connect tomato producers with consumers in an effort to lessen the strain on the farmers.
According to her, the initial order included two metric tons of tomatoes at a price that was three times the local average farm gate price.
In addition to having a direct connection to potential customers, Nogoy claimed that they are also looking into additional options to support the farmers, such as selling the tomatoes through “Kadiwa on Wheels.”
Nogoy stated that the mobile market’s goals include providing the general people with more affordable locally produced and manufactured goods in addition to assisting farmers in marketing their crops.
More connections will be made, and our Kadiwa on Wheels will sell more tomatoes, she said, “so our ‘kabalens’ (province mates) can buy fresh and at a lower price than those sold in the market and stores.”
Tomato prices ranged from PHP20 to PHP100 per kilo, according to the region’s consolidated weekly retail price monitoring of commodities from Jan. 23 to 27.
