Tuesday, the House Select Nuclear Energy Committee passed a resolution urging the Department of Energy (DOE) to establish a Nuclear Energy Division.

The panel presided over by Mark Cojuangco of Pangasinan, adopted House Resolution 387 during the hearing, supporting the effort of the Marcos government to include nuclear power in the country’s energy mix.

Party-list for APEC Rep. Sergio Dagooc, one of the writers of HR 387, said the DOE does not currently have an office dedicated to dealing with nuclear energy-related issues.

According to Dagooc, the new division under DOE should be in charge of creating the framework for the nation’s use and management of nuclear energy.

According to him, the proposed division should also boost efforts to use nuclear energy to address the nation’s escalating electricity costs and lack of supply.

The concerns he listed above might be resolved by “seriously researching nuclear energy as an additional source for the creation of power,” he stated.

He suggested that in addition to working with the PNRI and other relevant government organizations, the DOE designed and put into effect a strategic plan and policies for the use of nuclear energy as a source of generating electricity in the nation.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) that it was “time to re-examine” the nation’s approach to developing nuclear power facilities in the Philippines.

“We need to construct new power plants. The best technology now in use must be utilized, especially in the field of renewable energy, according to Marcos.
