DA “investigates” impending supply problem as pork prices rise.
Tuesday saw a modest increase in pig product pricing in Metro Manila when compared to the first week of March, despite forecasted lower demand because of Lent.
Pork kasim prices currently range from PHP290 per kilo to PHP360 per kilo, up significantly from the first few weeks of March when they were PHP280 to PHP330 per kilo, according to the Department of Agriculture’s (DA) price monitoring.
The same is true for pork liempo, which now costs between PHP330 and PHP420 per kilo, up from PHP310 to PHP390 previously.
The price of a kilogram of live pork, according to the Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines (Pro-pork), increased from PHP180 to PHP220.
The expansion of African swine fever (ASF) across the nation, according to pro-pork commentators, may result in a dwindling supply of pork.
Rex Estoperez, a DA deputy spokesperson, claimed that they have not yet confirmed the impending shortfall of pork supplies because it will have an impact on both the industry and consumers through market prices.
An 11-day scarcity of pork supplies is expected to start next month, according to the National Livestock Program, and it might get worse by June.
“That’s the projection, but whether how many shall be verified, it must be compared against the inventory, and harmonize with the stakeholders report kasi yan that’s prepared by the national livestock,” he said in an interview. “But whether how many shall be verified, it must be compared against the inventory.”
There was a quote that said, “Mahirap kasi ang magsabi na bagsak ang supply, mayroon pa tayong supply, may imbentaryo pa tayo. It’s difficult to say if we have a supply constraint, sufficient supply, or sufficient inventory. To produce the final results, we must harmonize the data, he continued.
Estoperez stated that data from end-March and other sources will be used to assess whether it is necessary to import pork products.
“Everyone else is advising importation if there is a scarcity. But if we choose that course of action, we ought to be aware of the eventual sum in order to protect our livestock business, he remarked in a combination of English and Filipino.
The DA additionally exhorted local government entities and other interested parties to support the government in increasing awareness and using discipline to manage the ASF.
Estoperez declared, “That will undoubtedly happen to us as long as we do not comply and as long as we do not adhere to the protocol.
He said in a combination of English and Filipino, “So we urge our fellowmen, right now we are doing our best to coordinate with the local government units to avoid the spread, even to the public, we need to adhere because we might also be affected.”
48 municipalities across the nation are being impacted by the spread of ASF in about 10 provinces.
While attempting to boost indemnification funding to assist impacted poultry farmers, the DA maintained its position that the international standards to battle ASF should be implemented.
