In the China market, PH durian is comparable to Thai and Malaysian varieties.

Philippine durians may compete with the Malaysian and Thai varieties in the Chinese market, according to Department of Agriculture (DA) officials, as they are similar in taste and price to those from neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

“Ours is better and tastes similar to Malaysian durian but less expensive. Ana Abejuela, the Philippines’ agriculture attaché, stated, “In that case, we have the benefit and competitive edge.

The first shipment from Davao in April received a “fantastic response” from Chinese citizens, according to early market comments, and the Filipino variety is comparable to the Thai durian.

“[T]hey love it, they love durian, and, because this is the small season, not the main season of durian, we only have a trial shipment to test the market, and there was a fantastic response,” she claimed.

To catch up to Malaysia, which presently exports frozen Musang King durians, the most expensive in China, the Philippines also hopes to start exporting frozen durians.

As soon as the export license was approved in the first week of April, the Philippines started exporting fresh durian to China.

Following President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s state visit to China in January, a USD 2 billion fruit export agreement was signed to increase imports of high-value agricultural products from the Philippines.

Abejuela hopes that Manila can increase exports to China as the two nations continue strengthening their agricultural relations.

She continued by highlighting the potential of accessing the 1.4 billion-person Chinese market, which has the second-largest economy in the world.

“We aspire to satisfy China’s market demand. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has instructed us to grow exports worldwide, not just to China. She said anything good must be improved; we must work on it.

The official hopes the supply issue will be rectified quickly as the major durian harvest season draws near.

The season for durians begins in the middle of July and lasts through the end of October.

According to Abejuela, the maiden shipment of durian and any subsequent ones are included in the nation’s USD260 million export goal for durians for 2023, which Manila intends to boost by 2024.

18 metric tons of Filipino durian from the initial consignment arrived in Nanning, China, before being transported to Beijing and the Gaobeidian Sunhola market in the northern Chinese province of Hebei.

Additionally, some shipments were delivered to Shenzhen in the Guandong Province and Jiaxing City in the Zhejiang Province.

According to Abejuela, the 18 to 28-ton air freight consignment is delivered virtually every other day to China.

Dole Philippines also transported a container to Shanghai to test out freighter shipping.

As the newest fresh Philippine product, Dole has just been launched, she noted.

As part of his drive to export more Davao fruits to China, former President Rodrigo Duterte initiated negotiations to export the Philippines’ durians.

With the application still pending, exports of mangosteen and pomelo are planned for China.

The Philippines also exports fresh pineapple, single papaya, cavendish bananas, mangoes, and Hass avocados to China and durian.

Since China imports most of its avocados from Peru and Chile, according to Abejuela, the Philippines is the only Asian nation exporting avocados to China.
