To help address the community’s concerns about clean water supply, sanitation, and hygiene, the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) trains its beneficiaries in the Kalinga province on manufacturing bio-sand filters.

The bio-sand filter mechanism is a straightforward household water treatment equipment, according to a news statement on Friday from Adela Damaso, the DAR-Kalinga Provincial Agrarian Reform Programme Officer.

The initiative is a part of the DAR-implemented community-managed potable water, sanitation, and hygiene (CPWASH) program.

The bio-sand filter, which aids in water purification, comprises various-sized stones and pebbles, coarse, fine, and activated charcoal layered inside a food-grade container.

According to Damaso, the goal is for every family to have a bio-sand filtration system so that residents are guaranteed access to safe, sanitary, and potable water in the neighborhood.

The idea is much less expensive than purchasing a commercial water filter, according to Fernando Malyong, a member of the Botigue Farmers Association in Balawag, Tabuk City, Kalinga, and a beneficiary of agricultural reform.

He continued, “Now, we will accelerate this replication so that every household can access safe drinking water.”

Jerry Donga, the barangay chair, praised the DAR for training the farmers.

He described how the community’s members had previously relied mostly on deep wells, hand pumps, and rainfall before the mechanism was made available to them.

To improve sanitation and hygiene, Donga requested the training attendees to give the bio-sand filter to the barangay, which agreed to replicate the experiment by installing bio-sand filters in every home.

“The project provides low-cost, culturally acceptable, and appropriate technology to address problems on poor access to potable water supply, just like what was experienced here in Barangay Balawag,” stated Donga.
