Upskilling is how PBBM plans to give Filipino seafarers new prospects.
On Monday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. urged the nation’s marine sector to adopt modern technology and safeguard openings for Filipino sailors.
Marcos also stressed the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in his remarks at the Seafarers Summit at the Conrad Hotel in Pasay City. This included shipping.
According to Marcos, “to support this shift, the shipping industry needs to adapt and integrate new developments into their fleets, starting with the retooling of existing ships and the construction of newer, more up-to-date ships outfitted with these new technologies.”
We can manage the choppy waters ahead and steer the world’s population and sailors toward a brighter, more sustainable future. He added that as we set out on this adventure together, may the winds be favorable and the waves be merciful to us.
The President emphasized the value of investing in a skilled and knowledgeable workforce.
Additionally, Marcos directed the Maritime Industry Authority and the Commission on Higher Education to collaborate closely with the shipping sector on the upskilling and reskilling of Filipino seafarers to assist them in preparing for the transition of oceangoing vessels from using conventional fuel sources to green ammonia between 2030 and 204
“We must work together to imagine and define the industry’s and the world’s trade’s future for the next 25 years with all hands on deck. We can achieve this by defining the skills needed for the new generation of ships, talking about education and training needs, and committing to a just and fair transition to create a shipping industry that is robust and prepared for the future, said Marcos.
Marcos promised the government would enforce stronger marine laws and regulations to safeguard Filipino seamen.
Aside from that, I implore all national government agencies, [multilateral] organizations, and private players to collaborate in developing ways to guarantee the availability of trained employees to meet the needs of the shipping industry. He continued that by 2050; this is anticipated to rise considerably.
In addition to other members of the Cabinet, the Diplomatic Corps, foreign ministers, and policymakers, the summit was attended by Transportation Secretary Jimmy Bautista, Migrant Workers Secretary Susan Ople, Labour and Employment Secretary Benny Laguesma, and other Cabinet members.
Other leaders of civic society and international organizations, including officers and members of the Filipino Shipowners Association, were present. Chairman Emanuele Grimaldi represented the International Chamber of Shipping.
