MANILA – After over three decades, another Asian country has been selected to host the upcoming World Youth Day (WYD).

Pope Francis joyfully announced on Sunday that the 2027 WYD will take place in South Korea, home to one of the fastest-growing Catholic churches in the world.

According to the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website, the exciting revelation was made during the concluding Mass of the 2023 WYD in Lisbon, Portugal.

The Philippines was the last Asian country to host the event in 1995.

World Youth Day, initiated by St. Pope John Paul II in 1984, is a gathering that occurs every two to three years, bringing together young Catholics and young adults to celebrate their faith.

In 2014, Pope Francis visited South Korea and participated in the Asian Youth Day held in Daejeon.

During his visit, he also led a heartfelt prayer for peace and reconciliation for the divided Korean peninsula in Seoul.

The selection of South Korea as the host country for the 2027 WYD reflects the significance and vibrancy of the Catholic community in the region. It promises to be an inspiring and unifying event for young Catholics worldwide.
