A health official stated Tuesday that cases of the highly transmissible Omicron type had been reported in 15 areas across the National Capital Region (NCR).

During a congressional briefing, Alethea de Guzman, Director of the Department of Health Epidemiology Bureau, said, “Our latest whole-genome sequencing shows that the Omicron variant is currently the predominant variant in the National Capital Region.”

She didn’t say which parts of the NCR had Omicron casings.

The variation has also been found in 13 of the 17 locations, which is contributing to the rise of Covid-19 infections.

“However, increasing mobility and a lack of adherence to minimum public health norms, as well as delays in case diagnosis and isolation, all contributed to the infection spike,” she said.

Although a peak in the number of cases is not predicted until next month, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire confirmed community transmission of the Omicron coronavirus type in the NCR on Saturday.

On Monday, the NCR recorded 13,543 instances, down from 15,959 on Sunday and 18,422 on Saturday.

The overall number of new coronavirus infections in the country as of January 18 was 28,471.
