By Holy Week 2022, the ‘iconic’ Binondo-Intramuros Bridge will be completed.

The Department of Public Works and Highway (DPWH) in Manila is nearing completion on the Binondo-Intramuros Bridge project, which is anticipated to open to vehicular traffic by Holy Week this year.

Emil K. Sadain, Undersecretary and “Build, Build, Build” principal implementer, said in his report to DPWH Secretary Roger G. Mercado that the 680-meter bridge project across the Pasig River is about to complete, with two lanes in each direction completed on the main bridge.

On Monday, Sadain, who is in charge of the Unified Project Management Office (UPMO) Operations, along with UPMO Project Directors Benjamin A. Bautista, Sharif Madsmo H. Hasim, Ramon A. Arriola III, Rodrigo Delos Reyes, and Johnson Domingo; and Project Manager Mechor Kabiling, conducted a thorough inspection from Intramuros to Binondo to ensure that the project is completed to the contract’s standards.

“You can walk over the bridge,” Sadain stated in a news release on Monday, “but it is still closed due to continuing ramp construction on the Binondo and Intramuros sides.”

Mercado expressed his excitement for the opening of the distinctive basket-handle-linked steel arch bridge, which will reduce travel time between Binondo and Intramuros.

The newest bridge in Manila, which will benefit about 30,000 vehicles daily and will be implemented by UPMO Roads Management Cluster 1, provides additional space for pedestrians and a dedicated lane for bikes for increased safety and traffic flow.

On the Binondo side, equipment and crews are constructing access ramps built of prefabricated Shanghai components, with an up-ramp at Muelle Dela Industria Street and down-ramps at Rentas Street and Plaza del Conde Street.

Simultaneously, ramps on the Intramuros side are being built, including an up-ramp at Riverside Drive and a down-ramp at Solana Street.

A government aid grant from the People’s Republic of China is funding the PHP3.39 billion project.

“We are grateful to the men and women who worked so hard to create this bridge, and we appreciate the devotion of the Chinese government and its contractor, China Road and Bridge Corporation,” Sadain added.

Under President Rodrigo Roa Duterte’s BBB Program, the bridge project is one of the DPWH’s main infrastructure projects.
