The UK’s 5.6 million vaccine donation to PH is a “testament to long-term commitment,” according to the envoy.

Ambassador Laure Beaufils said Friday that the British government’s provision of 5.6 million doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine demonstrates the United Kingdom’s (UK) “enduring commitment” in helping the Philippines combat the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

The envoy, along with Philippine vaccine czar Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr., greeted the delivery of 288,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses, which are part of the 5.2 million doses expected to arrive in Manila by Saturday.

The United Kingdom donated 414,040 vaccination doses to the Philippines in August.

“It’s critical for us to be able to assist our partners through this epidemic,” Beaufils said in an interview. “We committed to delivering up to 100 million doses (globally) and today, this is indicating that we’re living up to that commitment.”

“Our donation to the Philippines has already reached nearly 5.6 million doses, demonstrating our friendship and unwavering support throughout the pandemic.”

She added that the UK continues to collaborate with the Philippines on a number of fronts, including education and policy exchanges, in order to enhance the Philippines’ response to Covid-19.

“So, sure, it’s a broad collaboration with a lot of different engagements,” Beaufils explained.

The new British help, according to Galvez, was not requested by Manila but was begun by the UK government.

“It’s extremely opportune since we’ll be holding our national immunization day for three days, and we might need more,” he said, citing local government units in the Calabarzon and Central Luzon areas as examples.

The pandemic task group hopes to inoculate 15 million people across the country between November 29 and December 1 in order to reach the “population protection” threshold as soon as feasible.

Approximately 34,963,067 persons have been fully immunized against Covid-19 as of Friday, with 137,801 receiving booster doses.

Apart from the United Kingdom, Poland and South Korea are expected to provide over 500,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine before the end of the year.
