During a pandemic, improved transportation infrastructure helps Filipinos.
Nearly two years after the onset of the Covid-19 outbreak, public transportation in the country is nearing pre-new normal levels, with the Department of Transit (DOTr) continuing to walk a tightrope between adequate public transportation capacity and health procedures.
With the majority of the country on Alert Level 2, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has relaxed health regulations in public transportation, making face shields optional and increasing the maximum capacity of most public utility vehicles (PUV) to 70%.
These measures to remove limitations on public transportation, according to DOTr Secretary Arthur Tugade, are being done to boost the country’s economic recovery.
He underlined the significance of sustained infrastructure investment to strengthen the country’s capabilities, in addition to permitting free-flowing public transportation.
“The key to economic growth is infrastructure.” It is the dynamic platform that allows development to thrive and evolve. “It is for this reason that the DOTr has continued to strengthen the implementation of the ‘Build, Build, Build’ initiative despite all of the challenges posed by the epidemic,” Tugade remarked during a virtual meeting with overseas chambers of business on November 27, 2021.
Improved transportation infrastructure allows for greater mobility, allowing Filipinos to spend more time at home with their loved ones.

The Metro Rail Transit Line 7 (MRT-7) is one of these major projects, which is now over 60% constructed and scheduled to open in December 2022.
The 22-kilometer, 14-station railway system will cut travel time from Quezon City’s North Avenue to San Jose del Monte, Bulacan, from two to three hours to just 35 minutes once completion.
Six MRT-7 train sets, each consisting of 18 rail cars, have so far arrived in the country, with a total of 36 train sets projected once the MRT-7 is completed.
In the marine sector, the DOTr has completed 484 social and tourism port projects across the country, assisting the Duterte administration in achieving its goal of “equitable growth and development” even in the most remote parts of the country.
The Port of Zamboanga and the continuing construction of its passenger terminal building (PTB), which is intended to be the country’s largest PTB, capable of holding 4,500 passengers at any given time, is one of these projects.
In the aviation sector, 233 airport projects have been completed so far, with 84 more in the works.
Furthermore, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) has nearly completed its rehabilitation, while five additional projectsโthe LRT-2 West Extension, MRT-4, PNR Calamba, PNR Bicol, and the Mindanao Railway projectโare still in the design and procurement stages.
The Paraaque Integrated Terminal Exchange, the Metropolitan Bike Lanes network, and the Edsa Busway are the three major road projects that have been completed so far.
