The United Nations General Assembly votes to conduct a session on Ukraine.
WASHINGTON, D.C. — On Sunday, the United Nations Security Council agreed to call a special General Assembly session on Monday to consider Russia’s military activities in Ukraine.
Eleven countries voted in favor of the uncommon emergency session, while Russia voted no and three countries abstained: India, the United Arab Emirates, and China.
In her remarks following the procedural vote, US Envoy to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield referred to a draft UN Security Council resolution that would have condemned Moscow’s war on Ukraine but had been rejected by Russia.
“Russia blocked the resolution on Friday. But, as I already stated, Russia cannot stifle our views. Russia does not have a veto over the Ukrainian people, and it does not have a veto over the UN Charter. “Russia cannot and will not exercise its right to veto responsibility,” she stated.
“For the first time in decades, the Security Council has taken a significant step toward accountability,” she continued. “The council members who voted in favor of this motion understand that this is not an ordinary time.”
Sergiy Kyslytsya, Ukraine’s UN representative, thanks to the member nations who backed the request to convene an extraordinary session of the UN General Assembly.
“It is highly disturbing that the Russian President has turned today to open nuclear blackmail,” the ambassador added, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s threat to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine. This menace must be taken seriously by the entire world.”
The current situation erupted, according to Russia’s UN envoy Vasily Nebenzia, because UN members “turned a blind eye to the crimes done by Ukrainian nationalists in Donbas,” not because Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine.
“The Russian army does not pose a threat to Ukrainian citizens.” It’s not like they’re shelling civilian targets. Ukrainian nationalists are now posing a threat to civilians, and they are using them as human shields,” Nebenzia stated.
Friday’s resolution, drafted by the United States and Albania, aimed to hold Russia responsible for its aggression against Ukraine, reassert Ukraine’s sovereignty, and demand that Moscow withdraw its forces.
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a “special military operation” in Ukraine, just days after recognizing two separatist-held enclaves in the country’s east.
He asserted that Moscow had no intention of occupying Ukraine, but rather sought to “demilitarize” and “denazify” the country.
Western powers retaliated by imposing financial restrictions on Moscow and pledging military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv.
