Despite reduced testing, global Covid-19 instances are on the rise again, according to the WHO.
GENEVA, Switzerland – Despite limited testing and several weeks of dropping infections, the World Health Organization (WHO) raised the alarm on Wednesday about a global surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases.
According to the WHO, instances are increasing in parts of Asia, thus vaccination coverage should be expanded and prudence should be given before lifting pandemic response measures.
Globally growing instances despite decreasing testing, according to WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, “means the cases we are seeing are merely the top of the iceberg.”
“Continued local outbreaks and surges are to be expected, especially in locations where transmission-prevention measures have been relaxed,” he noted.
Over 11 million instances were reported to WHO last week, according to Maria van Kerkhove, WHO’s Covid-19 technical head. This is an increase of 8% over the previous week.
The Omicron variety, which is currently the most transmissible coronavirus variant, is one reason contributing to the rise in cases, she added.
Another aspect, she continued, is the relaxation of health measures such as masks, physical separation, and movement limitations in some nations.
“We also have insufficient vaccination coverage in many regions of the world, particularly among persons at risk of severe disease,” Kerkhove added.
Misinformation, such as that Omicron is mild and the pandemic is gone, is the third factor driving up the number of infections, she added.
“For Covid-19, we’ll need a very strong surveillance system all throughout the planet.” Despite the challenges we face, we must continue to test,” she remarked.
Because each country is dealing with a unique circumstance, WHO has repeatedly warned that the pandemic is far from ending, urging all governments to be watchful.
According to Mike Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, the virus will “wax and wane” since “it has not settled down into a simple seasonal or regular pattern yet.”
“We must use extreme caution. We need to keep a close eye on this and focus on getting the most vulnerable people properly vaccinated. And in every country, we need to do it as soon as feasible,” he continued.
