Free MRT-3 rides for a month to reduce riders’ financial strain
MANILA, Philippines โ Following the successful completion of the rail system’s vast and thorough restoration project, none other than President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has declared that the MRT-3 will provide free trips for one month, from March 28 to April 30, 2022.
“I’d like to announce that Secretary Tugade has determined that from March 28 to April 30, 2022, MRT-3 rides would be free (hindi naman forever),” Duterte remarked.
Duterte made the statement with Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Art Tugade during the MRT-3 rehabilitation project’s completion ceremony on Tuesday.
During the periods mentioned, train passengers can ride the MRT-3 for free in all of its stations, according to Tugade.
He also stated that this will tremendously assist in easing the financial burden of the riding public, particularly in light of inflation, rising gasoline prices, and the return to on-site work of many Filipino workers.
The free ride effort is planned to complement the rail line’s upgraded services, which were completed two months ahead of schedule by the DOTr Railway sector, MRT-3 management, and its maintenance supplier, Sumitomo-MHI-TESP, in December 2021.
The MRT-3 has been rehabilitated and now travels at speeds of up to 60 kilometers per hour, up from 25 kilometers per hour previously.
The number of trains has also grown, from 13 to 23 currently in operation.
Meanwhile, the headway, or time between trains, has been cut in half, from roughly 10 minutes to as little as 3.5 minutes.
“Bago mag pandemya, gumanda at nagbago ang ridership natin โ 260,000. Bagamat may pandemya, ‘yung ridership natin ay umaabot sa 280,000, as I speak. At hangarin namin, yung ridership ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngayon ngay Ito ang iiwanan ng Duterte administration sa MRT-3 (Prior to the pandemic, the MRT-3 ridership was 260,000.) Despite the pandemic, our ridership has risen to 280,000 people. Once all 23 trains are operational, our goal is to reach 600,000 people every day. In MRT-3, this is the legacy of the Duterte government) “Tugade said.
All 72 Light Train Vehicles (LRVs) were rebuilt, and rail lines were refurbished and rehabilitated as part of the MRT-3 restoration project.
The line’s power supply, overhead catenary system, communications and signaling system, stations, and depot facilities and equipment were all updated as well.
