MANILA, Philippines – President Rodrigo Duterte has not endorsed a presidential candidate, despite the fact that his party, the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), endorsed Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s presidential bid.

The meeting between Duterte and Marcos prior to the ruling party’s announcement does imply the Chief Executive’s endorsement, the Palace said Friday.

Michel Kristian Ablan, acting Deputy Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Undersecretary, stated during a virtual press briefing that Duterte has not yet announced his preferred successor.

“Whether or not this can be construed as an endorsement, the President has made no endorsements. They met after the meeting was arranged – President Duterte and [former] Senator Marcos. However, there is no endorsement from Malacanang,” Ablan stated.

Duterte, Ablan added, will not attend any proclamation rally on Friday, the start of local candidates’ campaigns.

Alfonso Cusi, president of the PDP-Laban, stated on March 4 that Duterte would be more active in promoting the party’s national and local candidates beginning March 25.

The PDP-Laban passed a resolution on Monday formally endorsing Marcos as the “candidate whose vision of governance is most consistent with the PDP-11-point Laban’s agenda.”

On Tuesday, Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar stated that it is “unclear” whether Duterte supports the PDP-decision Laban’s to support Marcos’ candidacy.
