ISTANBUL, Turkey – The World Health Organization (WHO) and India announced Friday the signing of an agreement to establish the WHO Global Center for Traditional Medicine.

The global health agency said in a statement that the center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, will open on April 21.

“For many millions of people worldwide, traditional medicine is their first line of defense against a wide variety of diseases,” it stated, citing WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. “Ensuring that all people have access to safe and effective treatment is a critical component of the WHO’s mission, and this new center will contribute to strengthening the evidence base for traditional medicine.”

According to the statement, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “Our government has been tireless in its effort to make preventive and curative health care affordable and accessible to all through various initiatives.”

“May the global center in Jamnagar contribute to the world’s best health care solutions,” he added.

According to the statement, India invested USD250 million in the center for traditional medicine.

The center’s mission statement stated that it “seeks to harness the potential of traditional medicine from around the world through modern science and technology in order to improve the health of people and the planet.”

The WHO defines traditional medicine as the “total sum of indigenous and diverse cultures’ knowledge, skills, and practices for maintaining health and preventing, diagnosing, and treating physical and mental illness over time.”
