BEIJING (Xinhua) – Authorities announced on Sunday that the second black box from the China Eastern Airlines tragedy, which killed all 132 people on board last week, had been recovered.

According to the accident’s emergency reaction center, the recorder was discovered 1.5 meters (5 feet) underground.

On Monday, a Boeing 737-800 airplane carrying 123 passengers and nine crew members crashed in a hilly area of southern China while traveling from Kunming, in southeastern China, to Guangzhou, a port city near Hong Kong.

The black box, which is expected to record flight data such as the plane’s route, speed, and altitude, could provide insight into the accident’s cause.

Due to persistent rainfall in the sub-tropical region, search efforts at the accident site outside of Wuzhou city, a hilly and forested location, are tough to maintain. Pumps are being used to drain the collected water and clear the site for construction.

Authorities stated late Saturday that no one was injured in the incident.

Officials announced on Wednesday that a black box had been discovered, but it had been “badly damaged.”

According to authorities, the weather was not hazardous when the jet fell, and the flight had maintained a routine connection with the air traffic control unit until its unexpected descent.

The aircraft had met all flight requirements prior to departure, and the pilots were in good health, according to a China Eastern Airlines spokesperson.
