The number of people displaced by the Taal conflict has surpassed 7,000
MANILA, Philippines — The continuous eruption of the Taal Volcano has displaced 7,237 people, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
According to the agency’s most recent situation report, this equates to 2,047 families spread throughout 18 barangays in Batangas province.
A total of 20 evacuation shelters are currently housing 1,209 families or around 4,165 people.
Meanwhile, 500 families, totaling 1,952 people, are receiving assistance outside, with the rest taking refuge with relatives and friends.
The afflicted populace has already received almost PHP1.2 million in help.
According to data from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the five high-risk barangays in Batangas include Banyaga and Bilibinwang in Agoncillo town, as well as Boso-Boso, Bugaan East, and Gulod in Laurel town.
It did say, however, that no disruptions in vital lifelines and infrastructure have been detected as a result of the volcano’s continuous magmatic activity.
