The government is committed to recovering overdue taxes from Marcos’ heirs, according to Dominguez.

MANILA, Philippines — The government intends to collect the Marcoses’ outstanding estate taxes, according to Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III.

On Tuesday, he told journalists, “We have been in serious communication with the Bureau of Internal Revenue on this topic, and they are analyzing this issue very thoroughly.”

The amount of estate tax owing to the government from the family of former President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. has been variously estimated, and Dominguez remarked, “that is for the BIR to assess.”

According to Dominguez, the original payment was around PHP9 billion, but due to fines and interest incurred as a result of many court challenges, several figures have been proposed, including PHP99 billion and PHP203 billion.

“So, which amount is going to be settled is in discussions right now with BIR,” he said, adding that “from what I’ve heard from BIR, they’re trying to cut through all of these obstacles in order to finish the job.”

Commissioner of the Bureau of Internal Revenue Caesar Dulay stated last month that the Marcos heirs received a written demand notice on their tax liabilities in December.

The Supreme Court (SC) decided in July 2003 that about PHP25 billion in Marcos assets were ill-gotten, according to the Human Rights Violations Victims’ Memorial Commission.

The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG), which was established in 1986 to reclaim the Marcoses’ and their associates’ ill-gotten gains, has recovered PHP171 billion so far.
