Biden hails the first African-American woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – On Friday, US President Joe Biden congratulated Ketanji Brown Jackson on being the first African-American woman to be appointed to the Supreme Court.

In a speech at the White House, Biden said, “America is a nation that can be defined in a single word.” “In a nutshell: opportunities… anything is possible.”

Jackson was confirmed by the Senate on Thursday with a 53-47 vote, which included three Republican senators: Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, and Mitt Romney.

During the Senate hearings, Biden acknowledged Jackson’s “painful and challenging confirmation process,” which grew vicious at times.

“What Judge Jackson went through was far more than that,” Biden remarked. “There was a lot of verbal abuse: rage, interruptions, and the most disgusting, false allegations and accusations.”

“Despite everything, Judge Jackson shown her amazing character and honesty,” he said.

One of Biden’s primary campaign promises during the 2020 presidential campaign was to appoint an African-American woman to a hypothetical Supreme Court vacancy.

“I could see this day when I made the vow to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court,” Biden stated. “This was one of the first decisions I made when I chose to run… It might be viewed as a day of optimism, promise, and progress.”

“To be here with you at this moment is the greatest honor of my life,” Jackson said as the President handed her the platform.

Since its inception in 1789, the Supreme Court has had a total of 115 justices. Approximately 108 of them were White men.

“It has taken 232 years and 115 prior appointments for a Black woman to be appointed to the United States Supreme Court,” Jackson added. “But we’ve made it… everything is possible in America.”

Jackson graduated from Harvard Law School and was appointed as a federal judge by former President Barack Obama. He was born in Washington, DC, and reared in Miami, Florida.

Justice Stephen Breyer, who will leave the nine-member Supreme Court panel this summer, will be replaced by Jackson.

“I am simply the first and most fortunate inheritor of the dream of liberty and justice for all,” Jackson stated. “I am the slave’s dream and hope,” says the narrator.
