Through ‘Enerhiyang Atin,’ PCOO and DOE encourage energy conservation.

CITY OF OLONGAPO – In the face of growing energy prices, a representative from the Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) has emphasized the importance of citizens practicing prudent energy usage.

PCOO Assistant Secretary Vinci Beltran, speaking at the unveiling of the “Enerhiyang Atin” kiosk here on Wednesday afternoon, said that with the ongoing rise in fuel and electricity rates, everyone must be fully aware and practice the right use of energy.

When the destination is only a few blocks away, Beltran suggests that people walk instead of driving, or join carpooling to save money on gas.

She also suggested replacing incandescent bulbs with light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs and turning off lights and appliances when not in use.

“Efficient energy use can also help to mitigate the long-term effects of climate change.” The most essential thing is to save our Mother Earth for future generations, not money,” Beltran remarked at the occasion.

As part of the energy department’s mission to promote the use of new and energy-efficient alternatives, the PCOO and the Department of Energy (DOE) introduced the “Enerhiyang Atin” kiosk.

The kiosk was publicly opened to the public after a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Beltran, Director Renante Sevilla of the DOE-Luzon Field Office, and other officials at the city’s largest mall.

The DOE’s “Enerhiyang Atin” program is described as a source of information, recommendations, policies, and initiatives aimed at promoting national energy efficiency.

Sevilla discussed the Philippine Energy Labeling Program (PELP) and Energy Efficiency Excellence (EEE), both of which the DOE is implementing to encourage energy efficiency, as mandated by Republic Act 11285, also known as the “Energy Efficiency and Conservation (EE&C) Act” of 2019.

According to Sevilla, all appliance and gadget manufacturers are required to place labels on their products with information on their energy consumption based on product energy performance so that consumers are aware of how much energy the product consumes.

EEE, on the other hand, encourages all local and government institutions and businesses to employ energy management systems and best practices for energy efficiency.

The DOE official also stated that “Enerhiyang Atin” kiosks are being set up across the country. “In fact, a similar event is taking place in Leyte right now,” he remarked.

Meanwhile, “Enerhiyang Atin” partners Nelson Clemente, sales manager of Daikin Air Conditioning (Phils), and Erik Kristofer Riola, marketing director of Firefly Electric, exchanged ideas on how consumers may save energy more efficiently.

“Our company completely supports the government’s energy labeling initiative to assist consumers in reducing energy consumption because this is very much in keeping with our company’s values,” Clemente added.

Riola, for one, believes that private sector participation is critical to the program’s success.

“Consumers should begin to shift their mentality. When our old light bulbs burn out, don’t just replace them with the same product; instead, upgrade to the latest LED bulbs,” Riola said.

Beltran led the guests and participants in signing a “wall of commitment” to do their bit in energy saving as part of the program.
