MANILA – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has transferred nearly 400 immigration officials assigned to the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) as part of its ongoing campaign to combat corruption in its ranks.

The reorganization affected 398 immigration agents performing main inspection responsibilities, according to BI port operations division chief Carlos Capulong.

He stated it was the BI-second NAIA’s personnel rotation this year. The first was held in March, with the goal of preventing fraternization among the bureau’s airport employees.

A daily rearrangement of the terminal assignments of more than 80 immigration supervisors is also implemented, according to Capulong, in addition to immigration agents staffing NAIA’s counters.

New officer education

Commissioner Jaime Morente announced that 195 newly hired immigration officers will begin training soon.

He said the new personnel will begin their training program on immigration laws, rules, and procedures at the bureau’s academy in Clark, Pampanga, which was signed by Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra.

“We expect these new officers to begin their responsibilities in September,” Morente said in a statement. “Their deployment will surely solve our chronic problem of manpower shortages in our airports.”

He stated that the new inspectors’ employment would increase the number of staff not only at the NAIA but also at other international airports.
