MANILA – The introduction of additional transmissible Omicron subvariants, according to OCTA Research, caused the modest increase in Covid-19 cases in the National Capital Region (NCR), not the May 9 elections.

“Palagay namin epekto ito ng panibagong subvariant rather than yung sa election,” stated OCTA Research fellow Dr. Guido David in a televised Laging Handa public briefing on Monday.

Despite the crowding of people in numerous sorties that should have triggered superspreader occurrences, David said there was no known surge in cases during the recent election campaign time.

“Since the election was over two weeks ago, this minor increase in cases that we’re observing could have originated from a more transmissible sub-variant,” he said.

Similarly, David stated that they are now tracking the travels of the Omicron subvariants BA.2.12.1 and BA.4, which have both been discovered in the country.

“We’ll see if these subvariants have a breakthrough here in the next weeks,” he continued.

The Omicron sub-variant BA.4 was previously deemed a “variant of concern” by the Department of Health (DOH) because it is more contagious than the other subvariants.

According to David, a future increase in instances due to subvariants could reach 5,000 cases at the maximum, but would not exceed 10,000 cases.

“If we think about it, our wall of immunity is still strong, more or less, but there are a few infections that have emerged here a slight breakthrough, but the uptick is still low,” he said, citing only a few cases of Omicron.

“This [is] encouraging, but we can’t say for sure because we’ll see in the coming weeks if the BA.2.12.1, particularly the BA.4 from South Africa, will make a breakthrough,” he added.

He reaffirmed that the country’s “wall of immunity” will remain strong provided people get vaccinated and follow public health minimal criteria.

The second booster to strengthen the ‘wall of immunity’

The administration of the fourth Covid-19 dosages or the second booster shot, according to David, will significantly improve the country’s “wall of immunity” against the pandemic.

He also mentioned that the Covid-19 second booster dose will protect people from developing “long Covid” or “post-Covid-19” problems.

David also reminded the public that vaccination should always be followed by strict adherence to public health measures like wearing face masks, disinfecting regularly, and maintaining social distance.

“Sumunod tayo sa mga sinasabi ng mga experts, makininig tayo sa mga alarms kung mayroon mang pagdami ng kaso,” he said.

David also recommended health facilities, such as hospitals and converted Covid-19 treatment centers, to be ready at all times in the event that Covid-19 active cases resurface.

Only immunocompromised people, healthcare personnel, and senior folks are eligible for the second booster shot, which has been given out 30,912 times as of last week.
