In the midst of attempts to postpone the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) once more, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) declared on Monday that it is “70 percent prepared” to hold the elections on December 5.

“We are essentially 70 percent prepared already. We plan to finish printing all the ballots and other materials required for the barangay and SK elections in September, said Comelec head George Erwin Garcia on the sidelines of the election body’s 82nd founding anniversary.

He further stated that by October, the electoral board would begin transporting election supplies to the various regions of the county.

He also mentioned that they will come before the Senate on Tuesday to express their thoughts on the staging of the BSKE in 2022.

“For our part, we recognize Congress’ authority to reschedule and postpone elections. But regardless of whether it succeeds or not, we will continue to prepare. If it had to be rescheduled, there would be an extra charge, he continued.

In case this year’s village and youth elections are redone, the election commission already stated that it will require an additional PHP5 billion in funding.

A petition to move the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) scheduled for December 5, 2022, to December 4, 2023, was accepted last week by the House Committee on Suffrage and Electoral Reforms.
