According to diplomatic sources, Myanmar’s military administration won’t be present at the Asean summit or any other associated gatherings that will take place in Cambodia next month.

The sources added that when the Cambodian government asked Myanmar, which the military has ruled since February 2021, to send non-political officials to the summit, that nation responded that no one would be sent.

According to Cambodia’s deputy prime minister and foreign minister Prak Sokhonn, who serves as Asean’s special envoy to Myanmar, it would be challenging for Asean to invite Myanmar to important meetings of the regional organization without making progress in carrying out the member states’ consensus, which includes putting an end to violence against the military junta’s political opponents and peaceful protesters.

Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are members of the ASEAN bloc.

The military of Myanmar overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi’s democratically elected administration in 2021, and since then, pro-democracy protestors have been mercilessly put down.
