A two-man congressional delegation from the United States (US) was greeted by lawmakers on Sunday night, demonstrating the two nation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen their long-standing bilateral ties.
The bipartisan US congressional delegation, which included Reps. Seth Moulton (Massachusetts Democrat) and Mike Waltz (Florida Republican), met with Senator Imee Marcos and Representatives Rachel Arenas (3rd Dist., Pangasinan), Stella Quimbo (2nd Dist., Marikina), and Tsuyoshi Anthony Horibata (1st Dist., Camarines Sur), according to a news release from the office of
In the Senate and the House of Representatives, respectively, Marcos and Arenas are in charge of the committee on foreign affairs.
The US lawmakers, both members of the US House Committee on Armed Services, paid a visit as the first joint military drills under President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s administration, involving 630 Filipino soldiers and 2,550 US Marines, began.
Following their bilateral meeting on September 22 outside of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, President Marcos Jr. of the Philippines and US President Joe Biden met with congressional representatives from both countries (UNGA).
During the bilateral meeting, Biden underlined the US’s commitment to defending the Philippines. They also touched on the South China Sea situation while reiterating their support for peaceful conflict resolution and freedom of overflight and navigation.
In addition, Marcos and Biden talked about ways to deepen bilateral collaboration on various topics, such as infrastructure, climate change, and energy security, as well as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine and its effects on food and energy prices, among other things.
