In the face of the pandemic, Go promises that it will continue to support the education sector.

Senator Christopher “Bong” Go pledged to support and seek legislation that will boost the education sector while also promoting the best interests and welfare of students and instructors.

Go expressed his support for the writers of the Proprietary Educational Institutions Tax Act during a thanksgiving ceremony hosted by the Coordinating Council of Private Educational Associations of the Philippines (COCOPEA).

For Thursday, Go join the other writers and sponsors of Republic Act No. 11635 in applauding the measure’s passage, which effectively lowers the tax rate on proprietary educational institutions to 1% of taxable income until June 2023.

President Rodrigo Duterte approved it on December 10 of last year, and it has aided private schools and Filipino educators in the face of the pandemic.

Go acknowledged the problems faced by educational institutions during the epidemic in his video message, and emphasized the need for increased government support to guarantee that the education sector continues to provide quality education to Filipino kids.

“As we enter the second year of the pandemic, we’ve witnessed how the disaster has wreaked havoc on our economy. Isa sa mga lubhang tinamaan dito ay ang mga private educational institutions dahil pansamantalang itinigil ang mga face to face lessons (It’s awful to think that private educational institutions are one of the hardest impacted here owing to the temporary cessation of face-to-face classes),” Go added.

“Napilitan pong mag-invest ang ilang mga paaralan ng napakalaking halaga para sa mga online learning systems, upang matugunan lang ang pangangailangan ng mga kabataan,” he said.

He did, however, express confidence about the law’s effects, noting that it would greatly lessen the burden on private educational institutions while also benefiting the education sector as a whole.

“As one of the bill’s co-authors and co-sponsors in the Senate, I have only the best interests of our educational system and our students at heart,” he stated.

“When we amended Section 27(B) of the tax code in Congress, we clarified that private education institutions should indeed benefit from lower tax rates in order to save our schools from closure due to financial difficulties, avoid unnecessary layoffs of our educators, and, most importantly, preserve the second homes’ of our youth,” he said.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Go emphasized that the government will continue to assist and develop the education sector to ensure that private schools can maintain their workforce and even hire new teachers.

“Sa mga guro at pati na rin ang mga kabataan, hindi po kayo dapat magpasalamat kasi trabaho namin na pagaanin ang inyong mga pinapasan lalo na ngayong panahon ng pandemya,” Go remarked.

Finally, he urged instructors and students to stay focused on their objectives and never give up hope.

“As we begin the new year, I am filled with renewed optimism that we will soon see the light at the end of the tunnel.” “May we use this critical measure to achieve even greater and better results for our country,” he said.

Go was also key in getting COCOPEA’s request for the Bayanihan to Recover as One Act to include one-time cash support for displaced teaching and non-teaching professionals who have lost their positions or have not received their wages included in the Bayanihan to Recover as One-Act.

RA 11510, also known as the Alternative Learning System (ALS) Act of 2021, was co-authored by the congressman and improves the delivery of basic education to underrepresented and underprivileged children. ALS offers pupils specialized programs and alternative education methodologies that are not available in the traditional educational system.

The senator also introduced Senate Bill No. 396, which intends to broaden the scope of the Special Education Fund’s purposes and applications. It authorizes the use of allotted funds for ALS operations, including salaries, allowances, and other benefits for ALS instructors. It also enables local governments to make the most of their resources by implementing innovative educational policies and teaching methods.

Go wrote and co-sponsored RA 11466, also known as the Compensation Standardization Law 5, in 2019, which provides another round of salary increases for civilian government employees, including teachers, in tranches.

SBN 1907, or the Act of Instituting Services and Programs for Learners with Disabilities in Support of Inclusive Education in 2020, was also co-authored by him. By offering free support services and activities to differently-abled learners, the proposed policy intends to improve the quality of education in the formal learning sector.
