The cost of the “Karding” agri-damage is P3.12 billion.
According to the Department of Agriculture (DA), PHP3.12 billion of agricultural damage has been caused by Super Typhoon Karding in numerous areas of Luzon and Visayas.
The Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), the Ilocos Region, the Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Bicol, and Western Visayas were all affected, along with 108,594 farmers and fishers, according to the DA-Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office’s most recent report.
Some impacted commodities are rice, corn, cassava, abaca, high-value crops, cattle, poultry, and fisheries. Infrastructure, machinery, and equipment used in agriculture have also been damaged, according to the DA.
A total of 134,205 metric tons (MT) of rice valued at PHP2.05 billion, or the majority of the volume loss, was recorded in production, with Nueva Ecija suffering the most loss and damage.
The loss of high-value crops was estimated to be worth PHP831.29 million, with Bulacan and Nueva Ecija being the most severely hit provinces. “Assorted fruits, vegetables, legumes, and spices” were among them.
Additionally, the cost of the damage to the fisheries is PHP116.55 million and includes lost fish production, fishing boats, and equipment.
In addition, there were PHP65.40 million in losses for corn, PHP12.86 million for livestock and poultry, PHP1.47 million in losses for cassava in Tarlac, PHP118,350 in losses for abaca in Quezon, PHP26.30 million in losses for infrastructure, including “damaged solar panels, ventilators, spandrel, and roofings,” among other things, and PHP12.20 million in losses for machinery and equipment.
The DA boosted its aid to be given to impacted farmers and fishermen as the number rose.
The agriculture department offers PHP185.69 million rice seeds, PHP23.16 million corn seeds, and PHP13.55 million various vegetable seeds. The bureau of fisheries and aquatic resources is also offering PHP2.45 million in animal heads, drugs, and biologics for livestock and poultry, as well as PHP554,000 in fingerlings and fishing equipment to the affected fishermen.
The Survival and Recovery Loan Program also offers up to PHP25,000 to farmers and fishermen.
To prevent the unexpected rise in commodity prices in the affected areas, Kadiwa stores have also been set up, and the DA has also activated the Quick Response Fund.
Before now, the DA promised the public that despite all the difficulties, from rising farm input costs to natural disasters, the supply of basic foodstuffs “would be sufficient for the Christmas season.”
