Due to the low number of children who received their normal immunizations this year, the nation may see a measles outbreak next year, the Vaccine Expert Panel (VEP) said on Thursday.

VEP Chairperson Dr. Nina Glorianni stated that catch-up vaccines are necessary for a televised public briefing to boost the proportion of children in the nation who are fully immunized.

If a child is under one year old and has gotten the BCG vaccine, three doses of the Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus (DPT) vaccine, three doses of the polio vaccine, and a measles vaccine, they are considered completely vaccinated.

“Around 70% of the nation will be covered by 2020. (According to the pandemic, in 2021, 56 percent of the population will be under lockdown, up from roughly 70 percent in 2020. When the epidemic hit in 2021, lockdown caused the percentage to drop to 56 percent, and so on,” Glorianni stated.

The nationwide coverage rate for recommended immunizations is barely 22 to 25 percent for the first half of 2022.

She continued, “So, even if we try to double our efforts by the end of the year, which is challenging, we’ll only achieve 50% of what we set out to do.

Measles and rubella (MR) infections nationally climbed by 153% from January 1 to September 17 (450 cases), according to data released by the Department of Health on Wednesday (178 cases).

In August and September, there were two deaths attributed to MR.

Glorianni advised parents to take their kids to clinics for routine vaccinations because the BCG, DPT, polio, and measles vaccines are reliable and secure.
